Manchester United have confirmed that Luke Shaw will miss the start of the Premier League season due to a fresh injury sustained following England duty.

Shaw, who made just 12 top-flight starts last season and missed most of his country’s Euros games, suffered a calf injury at the start of pre-season training with United.

The Red Devils shared an update on the 29-year-old’s condition on Tuesday, stating that they expect Shaw to be available for selection after the first international break of the season.

This comes after three games of the league season, which includes a decisive encounter against rivals Liverpool, who will be under the guidance of new manager Arne Slot.

However, Erik ten Hag and Co. will have to play that game without Shaw and, with Tyrell Malacia out for a longer period, Ten Hag will likely be forced to field a makeshift defence in the opening games of the campaign.

During the Community Shield penalty shoot-out loss to rivals Manchester City on Saturday, Lisandro Martinez played at left-back with Harry Maguire and Jonny Evans in the middle.

New £59million signing Leny Yoro has already been ruled out for three months after undergoing surgery on a broken foot, while new signings Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui face a race against time to be ready for United’s opening game against Fulham on Friday.

Elsewhere on the pitch, striker Rasmus Hojlund is set to miss the start of the season with a hamstring injury, while new signing Joshua Zirkzee is also struggling for fitness.

However, the Red Devils have a wealth of options available in the attacking areas, including Marcus Rashford, Bruno Fernandes, Amad Diallo and Alejandro Garnacho.

Shaw is almost certain to miss his England game during the first international break of the season due to his injury, meaning he will have to wait to play his first game since Gareth Southgate’s departure.

England Under-21 manager Lee Carsley will take over on an interim basis in September and could opt to call up other left-backs for a chance in the team.

Shaw was the only left-back to feature at the Euros, with Kieran Trippier filling in during his absence.

Shaw only started one game for England at Euro 2024, which was the final of the competition.

Separately, a meeting was held with United’s top executives on Monday to discuss strategy for the remainder of the trading window.

A midfielder is the priority between now and 11pm on August 30, when the window closes, and Paris Saint-Germain’s Manuel Ugarte remains the top target.

PSG are open to a move for the Uruguayan, but their £52m asking price remains a hurdle United are keen to overcome. There have been attempts to sign Youssouf Fofana from AS Monaco, but no official bid has yet been tabled as they are closely monitoring Ugarte’s availability.
