Team GB secured another Olympic medal in dressage thanks to a brilliant performance by Lottie Fry in the individual freestyle at Glamourdale on Sunday.

Her run earned her a title if Charlotte Dujardin had been among the favourites to take home gold before she pulled out of the Games in surprising circumstances.

Four years ago, footage emerged of Dujardin whipping a horse during training, prompting fierce scrutiny of the sport and calls in some quarters for it to be banned from the Olympics.

Meanwhile, Fry had to nervously wait for the final to be confirmed for the bronze medal, with Denmark’s Cathrine Laudrup-Dufour being the last competitor to take part in the event, but only managing fifth place.

Aboard Glamourdale, Fry scored 88.971% to finish third in the event, while Germany’s Jessica von Bredow-Werndl took gold and teammate Isabell Werth silver.

Fry has now won three Olympic titles at two different Games with the Team GB equestrian team.

This follows her success alongside Cal Hester and Becky Moody in Saturday’s team event, where the Team GB trio also won bronze.

Hester and Moody finished sixth and eighth in Sunday’s individual performance, while Fry added a third Olympic title to his medal tally with an impressive run at the Château de Versailles.

Their success continues Team GB’s equestrian medal run at the Paris Olympics, where they have now lifted five awards in two different riding disciplines.

Top honours in show jumping and further medals in dressage have added key numbers to Team GB’s medal total at the Games, where they sit fifth in the standings.

There had been earlier hopes that Dujardin, a six-time Olympic medallist, would lead the British team to gold medal success at the Games before she pulled out of the team on the eve of the competition.
