Liam Payne has said ex Cheryl is “really chill these days” as he gave a rare insight into how she co-parent son Bear, four.

The former One Direction star, 27, said on Tuesday on the Diary Of A CEO podcast that he’s also not sure whether he or Cheryl would like Bear to enter showbiz like her.

He explained, “I think his mom hopes he becomes a yoga person. His mother is very chill these days.

“I would never stop him, but I would let him know the risks. My parents did not experience what I had. I want him to do something he likes to do every day.”

“He’s gotten the best long-term advice from the parents around him, but I don’t know. Obviously, we’ve protected his identity to begin with.”

Liam applied to The X-Factor in 2008, where he first met Cheryl, but was rejected by the judges and rose to fame with 1D when he returned to the show in 2010.

Committed Mom: Liam continued, “He’s gotten the best advice from the parents around him for the long haul, but I don’t know. Obviously we protected his identity to begin with.”

Reflecting on his presence on the reality show, Liam said: “That’s not pretentious or anything other than the fact that I want to give him the chance to be Bear first before he has to be everything your mom and dad are.

“I made my choice to be where I was on 14/15, and I think he can make his own choice then. We are going to have a long discussion, because I also know what effects that has.’

The couple, who split in June 2018 after two and a half years together, have largely kept their son’s life hidden from the public.

On Wednesday, Liam revealed that he injured himself during a Jiu Jitsu session and accidentally rolled his knee.

He shared a video as he sat on the floor saying, “Hey guys, so I did Jiu Jitsu today and I rolled my leg and my knee, so I’m sitting on the floor now, out of the sun with peas on my leg.”

“But these things happen. I hope everyone else has a good beautiful happy hump day and yes, don’t try this at home.”

Liam’s latest revelations about him and Cheryl’s hopes for their son come when the pop star gave fans a candid insight into his life as he discussed his wild “pills and booze phase” during his One Direction days.

In the same podcast, Liam – who recently called off his engagement to American model Maya Henry – also revealed that he is unable to perform basic daily tasks and still “feels like a kid” despite his £500 million net worth.

Liam admitted that during his time in One Direction, he struggled with addiction and mental health issues that he has kept a secret until now.

Formed by Liam, Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan and Zayn Malik, the group formed on The X Factor in 2010 and they became the biggest boy band in the world before breaking up in 2015.

But Liam struggled to stay sober throughout the tour, confessing, “There were a few pictures of me on a boat and I was all blown up and I call it my pill-and-drink face.

“My face was ten times bigger than it is now. The problem was that the best way to secure us was to lock us in our rooms, and what’s in the room? A mini bar.

“So I had a party for one that seemed to go on for years. It was wild, but the only way to get frustration out.”

He also struggled with his mental health, and when asked about “suicidal thoughts,” Liam confessed, “Yeah. There are definitely things I’ve never talked about that have to do with it. It was really bad. ‘

Liam – who was just 16 when he started working for One Direction – also shared that becoming famous at a young age meant he couldn’t take care of himself because he was doing all the basic tasks for him.

He explained: ‘I was a director of a half-billion pound industry when I was 22. But if I’m trying to pay for car insurance, I’m useless. Pick up my mail? I am the worst person in the world. You are misled in your growth.’

The hitmaker added: “I still feel like a kid in so many ways. There is no connection between money and happiness. It’s a myth. Money is the ability to relax on certain things.’

Liam further revealed that during the lockdown he slipped back into bad habits and became dependent on alcohol, which made him gain weight.

Bloated: Liam recently said he struggled to stay sober in One Direction, confessing, “There were a few pictures of me on a boat and I was all blown up and I call it my pill-and-drink face” (pictured in 2014 )

He explained: “Up until the last few months, I was concerned. I think a lot of people had the same thing, alcohol. It got earlier and earlier and easier and easier to go to.

“What I’ve found more than anything with the alcohol is limits. If you’re using Zoom, you can probably get away with being a little tipsy when you’re not supposed to be.”

Elsewhere in the podcast, Liam revealed why he called off his engagement to betrothed Maya.

The couple confirmed their engagement in August 2020 after Liam asked the question during lockdown with a £3m ring.

The pair first linked in August 2018, shortly after Liam’s high-profile split from Cheryl.
