Dern was inspired to challenge her mom creatively as they walked, so she recorded their conversations.

At one point in the book, the mother-daughter duo recalls Dern’s difficult teenage years.
“Do you feel like I served you?” Ladd asks Dern. “Sure,” Dern replies.
“I bet you think about the time I slapped you,” says Ladd. You spoke to me, and I had a rough day. I was only 10, and I said something really clever to the teens in the fridge… I thought, What am I doing wrong as a parent?
Noting that she was frustrated that Ladd had not apologized for it, Dern noted that she was 14 at the time and reminded her mother that she was “really unhappy at work and wanted to go home and blame someone else”.
