Mason Greenwood ‘wants Spanish FA to drop Jude Bellingham investigation’ to avoid the Real Madrid star being punished over an alleged slur

Mason Greenwood reportedly wants Spanish football bosses to drop an investigation after Real Madrid star Jude Bellingham allegedly insulted the striker during a match.

The clash between Bellingham and Greenwood was communicated by La Liga to the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF).

“It should also be reported that after the match, messages were detected via social media regarding a possible incident in which visiting player Jude Bellingham allegedly insulted local player Mason Greenwood in English,” an incident report states.

“Numerous media outlets have reported on this incident, as evidenced by the attached report.”

Bellingham had launched a strong tackle on the Getafe player to force the ball out of play, and when footage of the incident circulated on social media, fans thought they had noticed the England international muttering the word “rapist” at the striker.

Greenwood had previously been charged with attempted rape, assault and coercive behavior in January 2022, but the Crown Prosecution Service dropped the charges in February 2023 following the withdrawal of key witnesses.

Spanish reports have claimed that Bellingham could be banned for up to four games, under the rules, if he is deemed to have uttered the alleged insult to Greenwood.

According SunGreenwood has pushed for the investigation to be dropped and for Bellingham to avoid punishment.

“Mason has told them he does not want Jude to be punished and has asked them to leave him,” the Sun reported, citing a source.

“He doesn’t want bad publicity and wants to continue playing football.

“I was very upset at the time because I didn’t expect this from someone like Jude.

“But he knows he’s always going to be a target for that kind of thing, so he’s accepted that he’s going to need to have a thick skin.”

The Spanish Federation’s Competition Committee reportedly received a report from a lip reading expert, after the RFEF ordered it in the days following the incident.

Expert witness and forensic lip reader Jeremy Freeman said he is “97 percent sure” Bellingham uttered the slur at Greenwood during their Feb. 1 meeting.

A coroner has been asked to gather all available information about what happened, including speaking to all parties involved about the incident that night.

The judge will propose a sanction or dismiss the complaint.

Greenwood joined Getafe on loan after he mutually agreed to leave the former Manchester United team on loan following the conclusion of an internal investigation into his conduct.

It had been understood that the Greenwood academy product would not play for United again.

However, by completing his £1.3bn minority investment in the Manchester club, Sir Jim Ratciffe appeared to open the door to a return, saying a “new decision” will need to be made.

Ratcliffe stressed that he would not speak specifically about the attacker’s case, but rather highlighted the importance of making a decision that respects the “values ​​of the club.”

“We need to analyze the facts, judge impartially and take into account what the club’s values ​​are.” Ratcliffe told the BBC.
