LA couple whose car tires and suspension were ruined by potholes are ordered to stop fixing them by city officials, after spending their own cash on bags of asphalt

A Compton couple was ordered to stop filling potholes in their neighborhood or face possible penalties from the city.

Daisy De La Rosa, 29, and her husband Alex, 35, grew so tired of the damage potholes on local roads were causing to their car that they decided to take action.

The couple, who rely on their car for their work as contract couriers, had suffered burst tires and a broken suspension.

Finally, after another flat tire, they went to Home Depot, bought $400 worth of asphalt, and repaired five potholes on their street. reported the LA Times.

Their neighbors were delighted, the couple told the publication, and even requested that they fill more holes in the dilapidated streets.

Alex De La Rosa, 35, said he got tired of the damage potholes caused to his car.

Daisy De La Rosa, 29, said the city “is upset with us because we basically embarrassed them.”

City officials were not very impressed and issued a cease-and-desist letter from De La Rosa on March 14.

“Your actions have raised serious concerns as they (pose) a threat to public safety and the integrity of our city’s infrastructure,” the letter said, the Times reported.

‘It is imperative that all maintenance and repair work on public roads is carried out in accordance with established standards and procedures to ensure the safety and well-being of our residents and visitors,’ he said.

“(The city) is upset with us because we basically embarrassed them,” Daisy told the Times, claiming they had to fill the holes because the city had let the roads deteriorate badly.

Now the public-spirited couple could face fines, penalties and “possible liability for damages,” according to the city letter.

However, Daisy told the Times that they have no intention of stopping and have even received generous donations from community members to continue their work.

The couple has created a GoFundMe to support the project, raising $1,300 to date.

“We’ve asked the city for help, but they can’t keep up,” Daisy wrote on the page.

However, one of the holes he filled turned out to be a service trench for gas line repairs.

“Many of us are workers and cannot afford these expensive repairs.”

She added: “My husband and I have taken matters into our own hands and are filling in the holes ourselves.”

Local businesses have also supported the couple’s efforts.

Road Soup and American Road Patch donated supplies and visited the neighborhood to see the couple’s work.

“While we budget annually for street repairs, our Public Works Department is currently understaffed,” the city said in a statement.

Adding: ‘Addressing infrastructure issues remains a priority for the City of Compton. “We highlight the importance of safety and urge residents to continue to report concerns on the roads.”
