Kingscliff home invasion: Dramatic moment as accused home invader is taken away by police after ‘accomplice’ was allegedly stabbed to death and victim’s arm nearly severed during botched raid

A man has been dramatically arrested and charged over a home invasion that left a convicted armed robber dead and the alleged target of the attack with a partially amputated arm.

Desmond Avery, 26, allegedly broke into a house in Kingscliff, northern New South Wales, about 8pm on Tuesday, when resident Allan Kerr, 66, was allegedly hit several times with an axe. .

Detective Inspector Matt Zimmer said officers called to the Housing Commission home found Avery’s alleged accomplice, Trae Laurie, a convicted bank robber, with a stab wound to the chest.

Attempts to revive him failed and he died at the scene.

Kerr was flown to Gold Coast University Hospital with serious arm injuries, where he underwent surgery and remains in a stable condition.

A crime scene was established at the house and detectives launched Strike Force Chams to investigate the incident.

On Wednesday night police swooped on an address in Kingscliff to arrest Avery and he was taken to Tweed Heads police station.

Avery was charged with especially aggravated criminal trespass and committing an indictable felony.

Footage of the arrest shows the dramatic moment the accused home invader was arrested, barefoot and wearing only a pair of shorts, as police detained him.

He was refused bail and will appear at Tweed Heads Local Court on Thursday.

Police will allege Avery forced entry into the home and assaulted the occupant before fleeing.

They will also allege that Kerr grabbed a knife to defend himself, but has not been charged in connection with the incident.
