Kim Mulkey said she is refusing to read the Washington Post’s highly anticipated profile of her, instead letting her lawyers “review” it and proceed based on their recommendations.
Rumors about a massive profile of Mulkey began circulating on social media more than a week ago, and Washington Post reporter Kent Babb confirmed that he was the author of the story.
Mulkey has called the story a “key piece” and has stated multiple times that she is focused on her team, while criticizing Babb and the Washington Post for the story that broke during LSU’s NCAA tournament.
Mulkey is one of the most decorated coaches in women’s college basketball, having led Baylor and LSU to four national titles. Her brash attitude has made Mulkey a controversial figure in the sport.
Babb’s article became public on Saturday, when LSU defeated UCLA to clinch a spot in the Elite Eight.
Kim Mulkey won three national titles at Baylor and won a championship at LSU last season.
Mulkey has repeatedly criticized the Washington Post for its article published Saturday.
“I hadn’t read that garbage,” Mulkey said after the win over the Bruins. ‘I’m not going to read it. That’s why I hired lawyers.
“The lawyers will look at it and when the season is over, they’ll call me and say, ‘This is our next step.’ (I’m not) reading that stuff,” Mulkey added.
Mulkey’s biggest criticism has always been the timing of the story, along with requests for Babb to comment on the story during the postseason.
‘Imagine that. I should have thought everyone would look at it, right? Mulkey said. “Get some clicks or it would be a distraction.”
Mulkey also reacted to a Saturday night Los Angeles Times story, calling it “sexist” after the author described LSU’s roster as “dirty debutants.”
The LSU coach’s criticism caused the outlet to make changes in the spine.
The Washington Post’s story about Mulkey did not contain any explosive revelations about her, which many expected after her tirade a week ago.
LSU will look to make another trip to the Final Four, playing Iowa in a rematch of the 2023 national championship on Monday.
