Prosecutors accused Trump of falsifying internal business records to cover up money payments tied to an alleged scheme to bury stories that could torpedo his 2016 White House bid.
At the center of the charges were refunds paid to Trump’s former lawyer, Michael Cohen, for a $130,000 payment to porn actress Stormy Daniels in exchange for not going public with her claim about a sexual encounter with Trump in 2006.
Prosecutors say the refunds were falsely recorded as “legal expenses” to conceal the true nature of the transactions.
The charges Trump faces are punishable by up to four years in prison. He has denied any wrongdoing and has pleaded not guilty.
The case is the first of four Trump indictments to go to trial and is the first criminal case against a former US president.
