Jose Mourinho says the love of Manchester United fans around the world will be more important to Sir Alex Ferguson than the £2million a year he has lost as an ambassador for the club.

Ferguson will leave his lucrative role at the end of the season after new co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe decided to terminate his contract as part of a cost-cutting programme.

Mourinho was asked about the decision as he prepared to face United as Fenerbahce manager in Thursday night’s Europa League match in Istanbul.

“My relationship with Sir Alex was amazing, incredible,” Mourinho said. ‘When my Netflix documentary comes out, you’ll know more about why I have so much respect for him.

‘The role of ambassador, I really don’t know that situation. No matter why, no matter what, Sir Alex has the most important thing: the love and respect of all Manchester United fans around the world. That’s more important than the paper or a few kilos you may gain.

On the situation at United since he left in December 2018, Ten Hag added: “Honestly, I didn’t waste a minute thinking about it. “I wish Man United the best from the moment I left.

“I left with a good feeling for the club, with a good feeling for the fans and I want the best for them. So, if things don’t go surprisingly well for them, it’s not something that makes me happy. But at the same time I don’t have time and it makes no sense for me to be thinking about what happened or didn’t happen.’
