A woman who was the target of AFL star Jonathon Patton’s sexing scandal says she is ‘happy’ that he is no longer part of the game after he announced his retirement.
Patton, a former attacker from Greater Western Sydney and Hawthorn, retired from the game for good on Friday after a series of knee injuries and off-field incidents that plagued his short career.
Elle Coonan, 22, told the Herald Sun she was relieved to see the 27-year-old remove herself from the AFL community.
“Seeing a man lose his job will get the message across,” Mrs. Coonan said.
“I’m glad he won’t have the same power over women and they won’t see him as special. It will send a strong message to others that you cannot get away with it. ‘
Jonathon Patton, a former Greater Western Sydney and Hawthorn full ahead, retired Friday after a series of knee injuries and off-field incidents that plagued his short career.
Ms. Coonan said she received unsolicited lewd photos and videos of the former No. 1 concept choice via social media.
Patton said his behavior was “completely unacceptable.”
“I’ve made the tough decision to retire and focus on my health, wellness and future outside of the game,” the former star said in a statement.
The constant struggle to overcome injuries since I joined the AFL 10 years ago has been relentless and on many occasions overwhelming.
“I also want to take this opportunity to apologize for my inappropriate behavior towards women.”
Patton said he ‘took the time to think’ about what he described as ‘mistakes’, saying his retirement was due to problems off the field rather than recurring injuries.

“My actions were completely unacceptable, and I am really sorry for the harm I caused,” he said.
‘I am determined to continue to learn from my mistakes and to actively implement the necessary changes.
“I have greatly appreciated the opportunities I have received from both Hawthorn and the Giants and for the continued support I have received from countless teammates, staff and fans of both clubs.”
Patton played 95 games in the AFL for the Giants and Hawks, kicking 133 goals.
He was called up by GWS in 2011 and he was tipped to be the face of the club after his debut in the 2012 season.
A succession of injuries slowed his progress before joining Hawthorn last year, where he played in just six games.

Patton’s retirement comes after he checked into a mental health facility in January after a string of women came forward to claim he bombarded them with lewd and sexually explicit messages and phone calls.
One woman came forward to say that Patton became pushy and ‘grim’ after they met on a night out in Sydney in 2016.
The woman, who wished to remain anonymous, said that Patton seemed friendly at first and was courting her.
After breakfast together, she slept with him, but has since admitted that it was “something she regretted.”
She said from then on that Patton started calling her on FaceTime, sending Snapchats, texts and messages on Facebook.
“They were constant, unrelenting and explicitly sexual in nature,” the woman explained.

Two other women took screenshots of Patton reportedly trying to catch up with them in 2020 while looking for a girlfriend.
In a short blog post written and published by The Hawks, the players were asked about their off the field goals for 2020.
The club promised to ‘keep an eye on how these develop’ while sharing a list of the best answers among the players.
While players simply wanted Sam Frost to wear more sunscreen and Ollie Hanrahan promised to dress better, Patton explained that he was hoping to get a girlfriend.
The Covid pandemic and subsequent creation of an AFL hub to keep the game alive dampened his efforts and forced him into a quarantine that lasted well into 2020.
But according to allegations made by Ms. Coonan and another anonymous woman, Patton was still struggling to meet women in the player hub.
Ms. Coonan, from Brisbane, claims that Patton offered to fly her to Sydney while he was there, and messages that appear to have been sent from his account ask her if she would be interested in visiting him in Melbourne.
Meanwhile, a woman he had an affair with in Sydney before moving to the Hawks claimed to contact her after returning to Sydney for the hub.
In two separate messages, Patton allegedly asked the woman “what she was up to,” which she interpreted as an invitation.
