Skins told the story of a group of teenagers starting secondary school in Bristol, although many of them were more concerned with having sex and taking drugs than studying.

The controversial teen drama ran from 2007 to 2013 and also tackled issues such as mental illness, eating disorders and substance abuse.

Talking about the Dishes Podcast With Nick Grimshaw and Angela Harnett, Kaya recalled being interviewed by Nick when she was 15 and “really drunk” at an underage festival.

She said: ‘For me, you represent that time. You were a safe place for us because back then there wasn’t the same protection for young actors, there was no one to care if we were okay.

“Whenever we worked with you, you were always kind, gentle, charming, funny and talented,” he added jokingly: “Enough of the butt-kissing for now.”

The cast have kept in touch over the years and Kaya previously enjoyed a reunion lunch with Nicholas and fellow actors Joe Dempsie and Larissa Watson.

Kaya’s role in Skins came about after open auditions for the show were held near her school in Finsbury Park.

She recalled: ‘Then my school got a fax saying they were having open auditions for this show called Skins, and they wanted teenagers, but they wanted real teenagers.

“They didn’t want to do what the Americans had done for a long time, which was to have twenty-five-year-olds, or in Grease, thirty-two-year-olds. Yeah. And so I wanted to see what it looked like.

‘So after school I went and stood outside the building, watching the line of teenagers coming in. But then Skins creator Bryan Elsley came out for a cigarette and came up to me and said, ‘Do you want to come and audition? ‘ And I said, ‘Okay. ‘

Kaya, who is half English and half Brazilian, was surprised to receive the role and didn’t think she would get it given she had no connections in the television industry.

She said: “And I did, and I remember it being a really great experience, but I thought this doesn’t happen to people like me. You have to have a family that’s really well connected, or you have to be English, and I never felt English. And it happened.

“I got the part in Skins and that role grew over time, and I was lucky enough to get an agent in America and work there quite a bit. Yes, it was a strange experience, the right place and the right time, but it was always a passion.”

Kaya’s most recent role was in Guy Ritchie’s Netflix crime drama The Gentlemen, where she starred alongside Theo James and Ray Winstone.
