A host of Hollywood stars, filmmakers and other artists are calling on California Governor Gavin Newsom to sign a new bill on artificial intelligence safety.
An organization called Artists for a safe AI have written an open letter to Newsom, urging him to pass Senator Scott Wiener’s SB 1047.
The law would require AI developers, such as ChatGPT creator OpenAI, to include several security protocols before training their AI models, adding to two new AI bills Newsom signed last week.

The letter begins by saying: “As you are well aware, some of the most lucrative and powerful companies in the world are currently competing to dominate the enormous business opportunity known as AI. Many of these companies are based in your home state of California.”

“But right now there is another bill urgently awaiting your signature that would regulate AI: Senator Wiener’s SB 1047,” the letter continues.
“This bill is not about protecting artists, it’s about protecting everyone. The serious threats posed by AI used to be the stuff of science fiction, but not anymore,” they add.
“While billionaire opponents of SB 1047 dismiss these concerns as fantastical, many of the industry’s leading engineers, academics, and policymakers warn otherwise,” the letter continues, referencing another open letter.
In a recent open letter supporting SB 1047, over a hundred current and former employees of OpenAI, Google DeepMind, Anthropic, Meta, and xAI said: “We believe that more powerful AI models may soon pose serious risks, such as increased access to biological weapons and cyberattacks on critical infrastructure. It is feasible and appropriate for cutting-edge AI companies to test whether more powerful AI models can cause serious harm, and for these companies to implement reasonable safeguards against such risks,” the letter added.
“SB 1047 would implement the safeguards that industry experts have called for. The bill passed overwhelmingly in the California State Senate and Assembly,” the letter continues.

The letter concluded: “We fully believe in the dazzling potential of AI to be used for beneficial purposes, but we must also be realistic about the risks. Now is our time, Governor, for California to set that practical, positive example for all of America, as well as the rest of the world.”
