In what is bound to cause quite a stir, Johnny Depp’s latest film – Joan of Barry – will open the Cannes Film Festival in 2023.
The film, directed by Maïwenn, will have its world premiere at the Palais on May 16.
In Joan of BarryMaïwenn stars as the eponymous protagonist alongside Depp, Benjamin Lavernhe, Melvil Poupaud, Pierre Richard, Pascal Greggory and India Air. The film, which tells the life, rise and fall of King Louis XV’s favorite, will be released in French cinemas at the same time.
The film follows Jeanne Vaubernier, a young working-class woman, hungry for culture and fun, who uses her intelligence and allure to climb the steps of the social ladder one by one. She becomes the darling of King Louis XV (Depp) who, unaware of her status as a courtesan, regains her zest for life. They fall madly in love. Against all decency and etiquette, Jeanne moves to Versailles, where her arrival scandalizes the court.
