Jamie Carragher has criticized Liverpool striker Cody Gakpo for “playing like the game was in slow motion” against Manchester United on Sunday.

Liverpool’s quadruple hopes went up in smoke after bitter rivals Manchester United twice came from behind to secure a 4-3 extra-time win at Old Trafford.

Jurgen Klopp’s side were left to rue a host of missed chances, after failing to put the game to bed in the second half despite being the better team.

Liverpool legend Carragher on Sunday called his strikers “very poor” and criticized Netherlands international Gakpo.

He tweeted: “Gakpo plays like the game is in slow motion.”

Carragher said the 24-year-old Dutch striker “played as if the game was happening at slow speed”.

Carragher added that Liverpool’s forwards were “very poor” in the defeat at Old Trafford.

The Sky Sports pundit added: “It’s an incredible game and it’s a great result for Man United, but Liverpool only have themselves to blame.”

“I scored three and the attacking players were still very bad. I can’t complain too much because they have been incredible all season. Football, damn it! »

Gakpo replaced Mohamed Salah in the 77th minute of the match, at a time when the Reds held the advantage.

However, he struggled to get involved in the match, with only one opportunity coming from a cross from Alexis Mac Allister.

Antony’s 87th-minute goal sent the match into extra time, before the Red Devils sealed the victory with goals from Marcus Rashford and Amad Diallo.

Gakpo started the season as Liverpool’s first choice No.9 ahead of Darwin Nunez.

The 24-year-old has scored 13 goals in 42 appearances in all competitions this season – although 17 of those matches have come from the bench.

However, this figure is lower than that of Salah, Nunez and the injured Diogo Jota.

Gakpo replaced Mohamed Salah in the 77th minute and failed to make an impact in the match.

Gakpo, however, has not been able to consistently play in a single position – playing in the front three and attacking midfield at times this season.

A potential contributing factor to his poor performance is that Klopp revealed he may have twisted his ankle during the match.

The German said Gakpo, Nunez and Luis Diaz had all suffered problems which will need to be monitored ahead of their respective domestic matches.

He said: ‘Now the boys are going on an international mission, they have to recover. We hope they come back healthy. We had some problems. Lucho (Diaz) felt his groin, Darwin his hamstring, I hope that’s not the case. And Cody twisted his ankle, I think. I haven’t seen it again, so we’ll have to see.
