The Australian Defense Force soldier injured in a horrific skydiving accident has been identified as the son of former Labor MP Joel Fitzgibbon.

Corporal Jack Fitzgibbon was conducting a drill at a RAAF base in Richmond, northwest of Sydney, when it was understood his parachute failed to open.

He suffered critical head injuries and was rushed to Westmead Hospital, where he remains fighting for his life in the intensive care unit.

Lance Corporal Fitzgibbon is the only son of the former Labor MP, who was the Member for Hunter from 1996 to 2022 and a former Defense Minister.
