As millions of people in the northeast were suffocated by a blanket of dangerous smog from hundreds of wildfires across Canada, many were quick to try to shed light on the situation.
The internet erupted with memes shortly after thick haze shrouded the Big Apple’s famous skyline – with the city briefly becoming the world’s most polluted city.
Many were quick to point out the similarities between the bright orange smog and the landscape of Blade Runner 2049.
The post-apocalyptic film resembled the scenes spanning New York, with many parallels between the film and the dystopia.
Others then joked that the skyline, which heavily influenced Gotham City in Batman, had become the mythical DC comics capital for real.

Another joked that the smoke was a way for the Rat Czar to finally fulfill his promise to get rid of all the rats in the Big Apple.
Trying to shed some light on the situation, as experts warn that 24 hours a day in smog could be as bad as smoking 14 cigarettes, one even joked that smoking cigars in New York would help improve air quality.

A sheet of smoke from the wildfires first descended on New York on Tuesday before thickening throughout the afternoon, leaving Manhattan residents unable to see the New Jersey skyline across the Hudson River.
In addition to sending New Yorkers indoors, air quality alerts have also been introduced in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia and the Carolinas, according to the National. Weather Service.
While some areas including Indiana and Ohio saw the smoke disperse Wednesday morning, other areas such as Pennsylvania and Virginia will see fog persist for several days.
