A 40-year-old dermatologist has revealed three things she wishes she’d known when she was 20 – and wants Gen Z to listen.

The tips were shared in a New TikTok video by Dr. Shereene Idriss, a board-certified dermatologist based in New York City and the founder of the eponymous skincare brand Dr. Idriss.

The doctor is an expert in facial cosmetics, fillers and lasers and often uses social media to share her skincare experience with her 961,000 followers.

This time, Idriss talked about the skincare habits he wishes he had implemented sooner, like using sunscreen.

“First of all, sun damage is real,” the expert admitted at the beginning of the clip.

In a new TikTok video, New York City-based board-certified dermatologist Dr. Shereene Idriss revealed the three most important things she wishes she’d known when she was in her 20s.

“You may not see it today, you may not see it tomorrow, but the reason I went into dermatology is because, sooner or later, you will see it and I won’t need to convince you,” he continued.

She said sun damage comes in different forms, such as wrinkles, fine lines, sun spots and even cancer.

Fortunately, there is an easy way to prevent sun damage: by wearing sunscreen, of course.

“You’ll save yourself a lot of headaches and money on cosmetic procedures if you just use the damn sunscreen,” Idriss urged.

She recommended applying sunscreen daily after brushing your teeth and making it a permanent habit.

‘Number two, I don’t care how drunk you are and it’s Friday night, wash your fucking face before you go to sleep,’ Idriss continued, as he shared his second piece of advice with viewers.

‘Use a cleanser, remove your makeup, because allowing your skin to sleep with makeup and buildup from the day overnight will only lead to a dull complexion over time,’ the dermatologist explained.

She said removing your makeup every night can be the key difference between aging like a “plum” instead of a “raisin.”

Three things Dr. Idriss wishes she had known

  1. Sun protection is important
  2. Wash your face every night, no matter what time you get home.
  3. Overdoing skin care can be just as bad as not doing it enough.

Finally, the last thing your doctor wanted you to know when you were in your 20s was that overdoing it can be just as bad as ignoring it.

“If you’re going crazy and stressing yourself out with your skincare routine trying to use every product possible, over-exfoliating your face and using too many actives, you’re going to trigger an inflammatory response at a younger age,” she said.

This can lead to a “premature breakdown” of the skin’s collagen, a protein that supports skin elasticity and strength, the dermatologist explained.

“Overdoing skin care when it’s not necessary will likely age you faster,” Idriss said.

“In the end, life is about balance and if you can’t do something in moderation, don’t do it,” she concluded.

In the comments section of her video, many praised her for the simple yet important tips she had offered.

“This is the best advice you can give to these younger girls/women. Things I wish I’d known,” one person wrote.

Another agreed: “All very true. I tell my friends to put on that damn sunscreen!”

“Where were you when I was in my twenties?” someone else lamented.
