Real Madrid’s legendary former goalkeeper Iker Casillas has finalized his divorce from the reporter he kissed live on television after winning the World Cup in 2010.

The Spaniard began dating television host and journalist Sara Carbonero in 2009. Their relationship is now over and the divorce has been agreed, according to reports in SPORT newspaper this week.

Casillas is said to have given custody of their two children – Martin, seven, and Lucas, four – to Carbonero, with the ex-goalkeeper leaving family home and continuing to pay for their education.

Although the couple broke up after five years of marriage, reports claim that ‘love and family prevailed’ in the divorce, with relationships remaining friendly and Casillas being able to visit the children ‘flexibly’.

The 39-year-old, who last played for Porto before retiring in 2020, has now moved to another home in Madrid’s Moncloa-Aravaca neighborhood, while his family remains in La Finca.

SPORT writes that Casillas and Carbonero visited the Pozuelo de Alarcon court on April 6 to finalize their divorce and confirm the agreement.

The pair had been together for 12 years and famously enjoyed a romantic moment on live television when Carbonero interviewed the goalkeeper just after winning the World Cup with Spain.

As the interview draws to a close, a clearly emotional Casillas grabs his wife-to-be’s face to plant a kiss on her lips before walking out of harm’s way.

The clip immediately went viral, catapulting the pair into the spotlight for the years that followed.

But in March of this year, just weeks after they denied reports of their split, Casillas confirmed they were breaking up.

The former Spain international, who had to quit football after a heart attack, said in one emotional Instagram post in Spanish: “Sara and I are both immensely proud of the family that we are and the fact that we have shared a love that has filled us with happiness all our years together.

Today, our love as a couple takes different, but not far, paths as we will continue together with the wonderful task of remaining devoted parents, as we have been up to now.

“This is a well-considered decision that we took in mutual consultation.” ·
