Iconic Chateau Marmont – frequented by the Hollywood elite – fired almost all personnel over coronavirus

Hollywood hangout Chateau Marmont has fired almost all of its staff because of the corona virus pandemic.

The union representing hospitality workers said the Los Angeles hotel, which has long been a well-known haunt for A-list stars, has let almost all of its staff go.

According to a statement from Unite Here Local 11, Chateau Marmont management cited coronavirus as a reason to release its employees.

The workers were told on March 19 that they were being fired for the economic consequences of the virus freeze, the union said.

Employees of the French-style castle on a hill above Sunset Boulevard did not receive termination benefits, and their insurance was not renewed, Local 11 stated.

Two days later, management fired many, if not all, of the same employees.

“The hotel has also not committed to recall workers to seniority when the crisis recedes.”

Over the years, Chateau Marmont, located just off the Sunset Strip in West Hollywood, has been the scene of many Hollywood scandals.

It has a long history of celebrities choosing to lose sight of alcohol, drugs and sexual desires.

History of the celebrity hotel inspired by a French Gothic castle

The French-style castle sits on a hill that towers over Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood.

Built in 1929 as an apartment building, it was inspired by the Chateau d’Amboise in the Loire Valley and takes its name from a road named after a British silent-era star, Percy Marmont.

In the early, respectable years, it was heavily frequented by British artists such as Stan Laurel, Laurence Olivier and Gracie Fields.

Downtown Los Angeles attorney Fred Horowitz had a vision to build his folly after seeing the 11th-century French-Gothic castle in the Loire.

He chose the plot on Marmont Lane and Sunset Boulevard in 1926 to turn it into an apartment complex, construction started in 1927 and opened in 1929.

Horowitz didn’t see the Great Depression coming and sold it to Albert Smith in 1932, who made the site an iconic monument.

Despite the increasingly run-down interior, the hotel was relatively inexpensive and actors, writers and musicians enjoyed the decadent atmosphere and the privacy and seclusion it offered.

His tolerant demeanor attracted well-known gay and bisexual celebrities, as well as those fleeing failed marriages.

Many guests checked in for a few days and stayed for months, sometimes even years. Some had homes in Los Angeles, but preferred to live in Marmont.

‘I have worked for Chateau Marmont for almost 23 years. It is completely unjust that the hotel fires me and my colleagues without anything that keeps us going. ‘

The number of Chateau Marmont staff affected by this move is currently unknown.

In its statement, Local 11 said it is lobbying the Los Angeles City Council to adopt a policy to protect jobs in the hospitality industry.

Former employee Michael Racanelli ‘absolutely shameful’ as the owner of the hotel is ‘worth hundreds of millions of dollars’.

He told the union, “It was incredibly devastating to go from full-time, temporarily lose my hours, but still qualify for health insurance, to end up without health insurance during a pandemic.

“It is absolutely embarrassing to do this to employees who have given so much of their lives to make a profit for the hotel owner, who is already worth hundreds of millions of dollars.”

Layoffs and cost savings have taken Hollywood by surprise, as the pandemic has many locked up, bringing the economy to a halt.

One of the hotel’s famous scandals includes Britney Spears having a breakdown in the dining room and smearing food all over her face and body in 2007.

The 1982 overdose of comedian John Belushi at Chateau Marmont in Hollywood made the establishment a household name.

After a night of partying with friends, including fellow guests, Robert De Niro and Robin Williams, Belushi, were found dead at the age of 33 after an overdose of a mix of cocaine and heroin.

Warren Beatty is said to have received unpaid bills after multiple sexual conquests – until asked by management to leave.

Anthony Bourdain reportedly drank excessively at the hotel, while Scarlett Johansson and Benicio Del Toro are said to have been hooked into the elevator on Oscar night, according to the book The Castle On Sunset, published last year.
