Dwaine Patterson received a discretionary life sentence for attempted murder at the age of 20 after shooting two people during a gang altercation in 2000.

A man who spent 20 years in prison has revealed the most chilling thing he experienced behind bars.

Dwaine Patterson received a discretionary life sentence for attempted murder at the age of 20 after shooting two people during a gang war in 2000.

He spent 22 years in prison, seven of which were spent in solitary confinement, where he endured 23 hours each day without any human contact.

Dwaine, who grew up in Clapham Junction, south-west London, was also sent to a young offenders’ institute for five years after cutting off the finger of a rival gang member with a knife when he was just 13.

Speaking on the Anything Goes podcast with host James English, Dwaine revealed how dangerous it was to be in the prison canteen.

He said: ‘One of the first things I identified when I entered the high security wing was when someone came out of the kitchen with a pot in their hand, everyone was moving sideways and everyone was watching.

‘One person would touch me and say “you don’t know where that’s going.”

‘Nine times out of ten it’s just someone cooking their food, but sometimes it could be used as ghee.

‘Remember this, in dispersions where you can cook food with oil, butter or ghee, I think these are some of the worst incidents I have seen.

“When you let it bubble for such a long period of time that it turns black and someone pours it on a person, it’s horrible to hear them scream.”

Dwaine also revealed how he once saw a man beaten “inhumanly” by prison guards to the point of urinating himself.

He explained that the man’s mother had recently died and he wanted to call his family to make sure they were okay.

However, prison officials rejected his request and he began kicking his cell door in frustration.

According to Dwaine, this caused prison officials to beat him to the point where it became “inhumane” and caused the man to wet himself.

Dwaine said he remembered the officers laughing and waving their fingers at the man before cutting off his clothes.

‘I think one of the worst things I’ve seen when I was in solitary confinement and I always remember it.

“He was a guy and he’s not a friend of mine. He has racist tendencies, but his mother died and all he wanted to do was call his family and have that conversation with his family.

“The officer said to kick the door again, he was getting frustrated because he wanted to make the phone call that he wasn’t allowed to, so he kicked it and (the guards) said, come on guys, let’s get dressed and they beat him up really bad.

“He almost became inhuman and wet himself.”

‘They were laughing about it and I remember that some of the female officers were also moving their little fingers because he was not (sic) willing to go down.

“Then they laughed at him and cut off his clothes and so on.”

Dwaine previously spoke on the podcast about how he cut off a person’s finger with a knife at the age of 13.

He said: “Being so young, because I was 13, you don’t understand the magnitude of what you’ve actually done.”

Dwaine explained why he cut off the person’s finger, saying, “It comes down to group dynamics and not liking that particular group.”

“I can’t say per se that that young man did anything directly towards me, but I didn’t like who he was connected to at all, so I was just making a statement.”

“It’s bad, it’s horrendous and my heart goes out to the young man, he’s a grown man now and has a family.”

Dwaine was released from Feltham Young Offenders Institution at the age of 18, but quickly found himself back behind bars just two years later.

Speaking about the night he shot two people, Dwaine said, “I received a phone call and said these individuals were supposedly dealing with illegal activity.”

‘My protocol was fine, we are going to go get what they have and they can’t say anything about it because they are also involved in what we are involved in.

‘We also had a system that if you showed You use your weapon. There’s no point in talking about something and waving it around if you’re not going to use it.

‘So that’s what I basically did. I pulled out the firearm and shot them both and I thank God they survived.’

After the incident, Dwaine eventually turned himself in to police while “other innocent people were being dragged into the incident.”

Dwaine was then given a discretionary life sentence for attempted murder at the South West Magistrates Court in 2000.

Dwaine previously spoke on another podcast, BEAMLDN, where he described some of the heartbreaking things he witnessed while locked up.

He said he saw someone “slit his throat from behind” and saw someone throw hot oil in another man’s face.

He said: ‘I’ve seen horrible things. Like someone having their throat cut from behind or hot oil, that’s horrible.

“When you see the person’s face and everything melts.”
