Willow Caelan

A Michigan woman could have suffered a tragic death in a terrifying car accident, but instead she had a near-death experience that changed her life.

Michigan native Willow Caelan, 34, was the victim of a devastating collision with a semi-trailer truck that pushed her into oncoming traffic, leaving her car so mangled that bystanders assumed she was dead.

An ‘inexplicable force’ saved her and while unconscious she descended into a state of peace where ‘nothing mattered’ and believes she glimpsed the afterlife.

She felt made of pure consciousness outside of her own body and connected to the “greater universe.”

Ms. Caelan was leaving a new job when a semi-trailer truck rear-ended her, throwing her 40 yards into oncoming traffic.

At the time of the collision, she passed out. Her car was so badly damaged that passersby probably assumed she was dead until she regained consciousness and called for help.

But while unconscious, she said she “felt like I was just pure consciousness and love, not a human being with a body.”

‘It was almost like I was floating in the void to connect with God or some form of the greater universe.

“I couldn’t see or hear anything, but I remember it was dark, it was comforting and warm. It was incredibly relaxing.

She added: “I was finally at peace, I wasn’t worried or questioning anything anymore, it was like heaven.”

The experience changed his life and the way he lived it.

Her manner and speech softened. Her colors were brighter. She became more determined and had a renewed zest for life.

She said: “I quickly realized that I had acquired a unique awareness of life… I wanted to experience everything. It became clear to me that we never know how much time we really have left here.”

Ms Caelan also changed careers and became a Reiki Master and Spiritual Coach to help others “explore their soul.”

She added: “The experience has allowed me to see the beauty of life and our physical reality. We don’t need to settle on what we’ve been through as our definition of ourselves, as we have opportunities every day to recreate what we choose to be.

“I feel much more connected to my soul.”

An estimated five to ten percent of Americans have near-death experiences, including 10 to 23 percent of cardiac arrest survivors.

Most people describe them in glowing terms, saying their experiences brought them closer to their higher powers and gave them a new lease on life, a loss of fear of death, increased self-esteem, and greater compassion for others.

Dr. Jeffrey Long, a cancer expert practicing in Kentucky, is one of the foremost researchers on near-death experiences.

He has collected more than 5,000 stories in over 30 languages from people of diverse faiths and cultural backgrounds and created an online repository for people to detail their own encounters with mortality.

One database user named Harry said: ‘The bits of light closest to me were my parents, my grandparents, my family, all of whom have passed away before me, and connected to them further away were my close friends, and connected to them were the people who had influenced me and whom I had influenced.’

Another star wrote: “A pure, brilliant light enveloped me, and I no longer had a physical body. But did I still exist? I had no eyes to see, but I looked at everything around me. I was in the center of a vast nothingness, but the nothingness was not empty. It was completely filled with the presence of the living God.”

Through decades of research, Dr. Long has concluded that approximately 45 percent of near-death experiences involve a feeling of being out of body, in which people’s consciousness is separated from their physical self.

About three-quarters of those who experience this say they wish to remain in the afterlife because of the immense love and joy that fills them. More than half say they have seen a “heavenly” realm, and about a quarter are shrouded in light or mist.
