A husband has been charged with murder after his wife's body was dug up in the backyard of his family's home.

The 36-year-old man is accused of killing Fahima Yusuf, 32, whose remains were found by police Wednesday afternoon.

The officers made the grim discovery at the Carlisle house in South Perth, a few meters from the children's toys.

The police spent the day on the Weston Street property while investigating the disappearance of Ms. Yusuf, who had been treated as a suspect.

According to reports, they had not seen her since Friday afternoon.

The officers had initially gone to the house as part of a welfare check, then they were called homicide and forensic detectives.

Piles of dirt were unearthed in the backyard as part of an extensive police investigation, before Ms. Yusuf's body was recovered.

The neighbors told the media that the house was home to a couple and two small children.

The man, who was denied bail, is expected to face the Perth Magistrates Court on Thursday.
