How the iPhone 11 compares to the best Android devices

Apple's new iPhones are here, with the new iPhone 11 replacing last year's XR model, and the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max models that follow the XS and XS Max as more premium options. But how do they relate to the best Android phones on the market, such as the Galaxy Note 10, Galaxy S10, Google Pixel 3 and OnePlus 7 Pro?

As expected, the new iPhones are largely upgraded versions of last year's hardware, with a special focus on camera systems: the 11 now has a setup with two cameras, adding an ultra-wide camera to the single lens of the XR. The 11 Pro telephones now have three cameras: a telephoto, a wide angle and an ultra wide angle. Both phones also get the night mode for improved photography in low light.

Other updates are less dramatic: there is an upgraded A13 chip, which Apple claims is both the "fastest CPU in a smartphone" and the "fastest GPU in a smartphone." There are also improvements in Face ID, which should make it work more angles.

Of course there is much more to the image than just unprocessed specifications, especially with regard to iPhones. Apple's end-to-end control over software and hardware means that iPhones can often do more with less, so things like low numbers for RAM or battery size may not tell the whole story about what these devices actually want to use from day to day .

But the numbers still make a little difference when you decide what a place deserves in your bag or pocket. This is how the new iPhones pile up:
