Legendary music producer Quincy Jones spotted Diddy more than a decade ago, as revealed in his scathing review of the rapper’s musical abilities in 2012.
Jones, who died at the age of 91 on Sunday night, wasn’t carried away by Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs’ bravado and wasn’t afraid to express it either.
The music titan punched Diddy at a Spotify launch event during a conversation with Bruno Mars and audience members in June 2012, saying the rapper accused of rape “wouldn’t recognize a B flat” if it hit him.
Instead, according to Jones, ‘P. Diddy has a PhD in marketing…. He has clothing and Ciroc vodka companies,” adding that artists should “learn their craft.”
Jones is famous for producing Michael Jackson’s Thriller album and collaborating with artists such as Frank Sinatra and Ray Charles during his storied career.

Jones viewed Diddy as a master marketer rather than a musician, as revealed by scathing comments he made about the rapper in 2012. (Pictured: Jones and Diddy at the launch of Sean John’s Elite footwear collection at the Setai Hotel on August 27, 2005)

His publicist Arnold Robinson said he died Sunday night surrounded by his family at his home in the Bel Air area of Los Angeles, California. No cause of death was given.
Jones’ family, which includes his daughter and actress Rashida Jones, who played Karen Filippelli on The Office, said in a statement: “Tonight, with full but broken hearts, we must share the news of our father’s passing and brother Quincy Jones.”
“And while this is an incredible loss for our family, we celebrate the great life he lived and know there will never be another like him.”
Along with Rashida, Jones, known to her friends as ‘Q’, is survived by her daughters Jolie Jones Levine, Rachel Jones, Martina Jones, Kidada Jones and Kenya Kinski-Jones; son Quincy Jones III; brother Richard Jones and sisters Theresa Frank and Margie Jay.
Jones’ latest Instagram post yesterday wished her daughter Martina ‘Tina’ a happy birthday and featured a photo of the two of them smiling together. It read: ‘Happy birthday to my Tina Beena! I am very proud to be your dad! A big hug, I love you eternally.’

Diddy, shown in a pumpkin patch in Los Angeles in 2019, will spend his 55th birthday today at the Brooklyn Metropolitan Detention Center and appear briefly in court.
Meanwhile, Diddy is marking 55 years behind bars at the Brooklyn Metropolitan Detention Center.
The rapper, who is awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking and racketeering charges, is also scheduled to appear in federal court later Monday.
The New York Post reports that today Diddy will be given the choice between cheese pizza, salad, or pasta for lunch.
That’s what’s on the menu at the prison, where the feds seized drugs and phones last week as part of a “multi-agency” operation that they insist is not linked to their high-profile case.
Diddy, whose real name is Sean Combs, insists he is being wrongly accused.
He maintains that, while sordid, the parties prosecutors want to send him to were all consensual.
Dozens of women have come out to insist that was not the case.
He has also been accused by grand jury witnesses of abusing young stars, although such claims have not been substantiated.
Diddy is currently being held at the Brooklyn Metropolitan Detention Center.
Last week, witness Courtney Burgess went public with her claims that she had seen tapes of Diddy “victimizing” at least eight celebrities.
He claims the videos come from a flash drive owned by Diddy’s ex, the late Kim Porter, who obtained the footage from hidden cameras in the rapper’s home.
Burgess appeared on NewsNation’s Banfield to testify about what he had seen.
It is unclear whether the grand jury saw the footage or simply heard about it.
The rapper’s family, including his children, strongly support him.
They insist he is being attacked by biased prosecutors.
Diddy’s unraveling began when a disturbing video surfaced last year showing him punching his ex-girlfriend, Cassie Ventura, in the hallway of a Los Angeles hotel.
He was seen chasing her down the hallway as she tried to escape him, kicking her and pulling her hair to prevent her from fleeing.
He apologized for the undeniable images in a video statement, but says that’s as far as his bad behavior goes.
