How much would the Crown Jewels be worth if you pulled off the crime of the century?

Date:

No one has come close to stealing the Crown Jewels since Thomas Blood in 1671. But how much would they be worth if you pulled off the crime of the century?

In 1671 Thomas Blood nearly succeeded in stealing the crown jewels, but he was caught, pardoned and even paid £90,000 of land for his audacity.

Since then, no one has failed to seize it. But if they did, what would their glittering loot be worth?

Officially priceless and uninsured, the Crown Jewels are valued at over £6billion.

St Edward’s Crown – with which King Charles III was crowned at Westminster Abbey – is crafted from nearly four and a half pounds of gold and adorned with more than 400 precious stones. He is expected to be worth £45million.

The Imperial State Crown, however, is made of gold, silver and platinum and is encrusted with over 3,000 precious and semi-precious stones. And its value is estimated at 3 to 5 billion pounds sterling.

No wonder only three people are allowed to touch them: the monarch, the Archbishop of Canterbury and the crown jeweller.
