Anthony Albanese’s fiancée Jodie Haydon turned heads on Wednesday night when she turned up at the Midwinter Ball in Canberra in a recycled dress.

The financial services professional, 45, and the Prime Minister, 61, arrived shortly before 7.30pm and looked like a couple in love as they posed for photographs.

Mr Albanese appeared keen to avoid negative attention during the current cost of living crisis, opting to wear a simple black suit, while Ms Haydon chose a sparkly dress which she last wore in public in 2022.

Melbourne designer Lucy Laurita redesigned the dress, which featured a plunging neckline, with sustainable fashion in mind.

Ms Haydon looked sensational again in the spectacular sequinned gown she first wore to the 2022 Mid-Winter Ball.

This comes just days after Haydon was mistaken for Australia’s new Governor-General Sam Mostyn in an embarrassing ABC gaffe.

ABC News presenter Gemma Veness was reporting on the swearing-in ceremony at Parliament House on Monday when the mix-up occurred.

That morning, Ms Haydon left Parliament with Mr Albanese to greet the waiting media.

But via the footage, Veness told viewers: “We can see Sam Mostyn on our screens now arriving in Canberra for the swearing-in ceremony.”

A moment later, as the duo approached the cameras, Veness realised his mistake and corrected himself, adding: “Actually, my apologies… that’s actually Jodie Haydon.”

Later in the Senate, Ms Mostyn was seen smiling as she walked in just as the swearing-in ceremony was about to begin.

Last week, the government passed legislation to provide the Governor General with an annual salary of $709,000, $200,000 more than her predecessor.

The reason for the $200,000 increase is in line with the constitutional requirement that the Governor General’s salary cannot be changed within a five-year period and is set out in relation to the remuneration of the Chief Justice of the High Court.

The pay rise sparked outrage among the Coalition and the Greens for being out of touch with reality during a cost of living crisis, but was eventually passed through parliament without too much difficulty.

On Monday, politicians from both major parties packed the Senate to watch as Ms Mostyn, a well-known republican, swore “to be faithful and bear true allegiance to His Majesty King Charles III, his heirs and successors according to law”.
