A man was shot and killed in the parking lot of a regional hospital.

Police said they became “engaged” with a man in the car park of Manning Base Hospital in Taree, on the New South Wales north coast, about 12.55pm on Thursday.

“During the confrontation, the man allegedly pointed a firearm at attending officers and was shot by police,” police said in a statement.

‘Officers immediately rendered assistance to the man prior to the arrival of NSW Ambulance paramedics.

“The man, believed to be in his 30s, was taken to Manning Base Hospital, where he died a short time later.”

No police officers or others were physically injured in the incident.

That investigation will also be subject to an independent review.
