Football legend Johnathan Thurston collapsed during an emotional interview with 60 minutes about his uncle's horrific murder

Rugby league legend Johnathan Thurston collapsed during an emotional interview about his uncle's horrific murder.

The 35-year-old revealed the moment when his life changed forever in a heartfelt 60-minute interview on Sunday night.

I have never talked to anyone about that. This is the first time I mention it, so it just gives me back all those memories, "he said as tears ran down his face.

In 2008, Thurston's uncle was brutally murdered in a park by eight men, while the former North Queensland star Cowboys was on tour with the Australian kangaroos.

Samantha Lynch, her partner at that time and wife since 2015, was forced to break the news in a disturbing phone call.

& # 39; Receiving the call from Samantha, that my uncle had been murdered in a park. "Yes, that was extremely difficult, a difficult phone call to receive," Thurston said before breaking up.

Despite his anguish, Thurston went on the field and played a phenomenal game.

"And I know he would have been up there smiling, proud like a punch," Thurston said.

His wife Samantha sat next to him during the emotional interview.

Samantha said her husband "always puts the family first."

It's genuine. "He has his heart on his sleeve," he said.

Samantha said that Thurston is a "patient and loving" father.

"Because he is still a big boy, they feed off that and have their funniest moments with him," he said.

Thurston also reflected on his childhood years and his dedication to becoming a talented footballer.

He cried when talking about his parents and his decision to send him to a private school in Toowoomba for a football scholarship.

Thurston admitted that he would not be where he is now without his parents' guidance.

& # 39; They gave me everything I needed to … yes, achieve what I want to do. Thinking of them alone, yes. Grateful, grateful, "he said.

Thurston also referred to the Bulldogs' sex scandal in 2004, where a 20-year-old woman alleged she was raped by a gang at a resort on the north-north coast of New South Wales by six players.

No charges were filed and the team refused to discuss the incident, but Thurston decided to clarify the file.

"They were very serious accusations (…) I was not part of that, but we certainly broke the rules of the team," he said.

"Talking about that is hard enough to know that my daughters will probably see it when they grow up and have to sit down and explain to them what my side of this story is going to be difficult."
