A die-hard Borussia Dortmund fan who went viral after turning down a ticket to the Champions League final has been given a free trip to watch his team against Real Madrid at the Bernabeu this week.
Matthias Peitz found a huge audience on TikTok in June after leaving an interviewer on the verge of tears in a touching moment in the run-up to the final between Borussia Dortmund and Real Madrid.
In an interview at a subway station with ‘Robdidtiktok‘, the fan explained his journey to the game and, after revealing how much it would mean to him to be at the game, he was offered a ticket.
However, in a remarkable show of loyalty to the five friends he had traveled with, the follower rejected the opportunity, leaving the interviewer in shock.
‘I appreciate your ticket but all or none. But we’re a group, we’re friends, if I could just watch the game, it’s not fair to my friends. But friendship…’
Matthias Peitz went viral on TikTok in June after leaving an interviewer close to tears, and now he’s been watching his team at the Bernabeu.
Peitz’s selfless act was discovered by UEFA sponsor Heineken as part of their ‘Real Hardcore Fans’ campaign, and they sought to reward him by hosting him, this time with all his friends, at the match they couldn’t attend last season.
“At first I was very surprised,” Peitz told Mail Sport. ‘We are very happy and grateful.
“It’s fantastic, it’s a very kind and generous invitation for us and we are very, very happy to be here.”
This time, Peitz was able to watch the game with all his friends in Madrid
Dortmund led by two goals at the Bernabéu but ultimately lost to an epic comeback
When asked if he still stood by his original decision to refuse entry to Wembley, Peitz added: “I don’t regret it, it would have meant watching the game alone without my friends, and that’s not what I wanted.
“I wanted to watch it with my friends, and that’s what football is about: watching it, having fun and enjoying it with my friends.”
‘For me it’s obvious, they go together or not’
Unfortunately for Matthias and his friends, the result did not go as they expected, and Madrid turned the game around in dramatic fashion in the second half, concluding with a 5-2 victory for Los Blancos.
