Halsey previewed her latest single, Lucky, which includes a sample of Britney Spears’ hit of the same name from her second album, Oops! I Did It Again, released in 2000.
Revealing the news to her fans, the Closer singer, 29, who uses she/they pronouns, revealed that when she was five years old she “always felt like Britney was singing directly to her”.
“24 years later these words sound different. I will love you forever,” she captioned a video of herself sporting pink hair, a pair of microscopic shorts and a white top with the word “Lucky” across the chest.
In Halsey’s new song, she sings almost the same chorus that Spears sang in her heartbreaking ballad, which goes: “But I’m so lucky, I’m a star, But I cry, I cry, I cry in the lonely heart thinking, if there’s nothing missing in my life, then why do these tears come at night?”
The snippet featured a slight deviation from Spears’ original words, as Halsey opted to put a first-person spin on the lyrics.

In contrast, Spears originally sang: ‘She’s so lucky, she’s a star / But she cries, cries, cries in her lonely heart, thinking / If there’s nothing missing in my life / Then why do these tears come at night?’
The song will be included on Halsey’s upcoming fifth studio album, which is currently untitled.
Her release comes seven years after she was accused of disparaging Spears following an interview in which she claimed she believed Britney Spears wrote all of her own music.
In 2017, one mother of a young boy stated that she had “never considered herself” a “CEO until recently.”
“At first, it was naivety. I thought every artist did everything themselves. I thought Britney Spears wrote her own music, I thought every superstar designed their own live show, so I always did that stuff,” she said. Fast company.
Halsey continued: “I’d never been an artist before, obviously, and we’ve built this very organically. He never said no to me, because he didn’t know I was supposed to. And I just did everything myself because I didn’t have the resources to do it any other way.”
After the comments sparked backlash, the three-time Grammy nominee took to X (then Twitter) to clarify: “Most things are easy to ignore but that one hurts because I love her and have always spoken highly of her and her brilliance is undeniable.”
“I love Britney so much and wish people wouldn’t spread things,” she added in another tweet in 2017. “All I said was it takes a lot of people to complete a song.”

Despite her sincere apology, die-hard fans of the Toxic hitmaker didn’t seem as forgiving, accusing her of “shadowing artists to be relevant” in the interview, which was shared by the X account. Craving for pop.
Halsey has apparently earned Spears’ approval, as the two now follow each other on Instagram.
In 2021, as Spears was fighting to end her 13-year conservatorship, Halsey showed her support for the music icon and expressed hope that she would be freed.
“I sincerely hope she is granted freedom from this abusive system,” MaXXXine wrote. “She deserves it more than anything. I admire her courage in speaking up for herself today.”
She continued: “Also, fuck anyone who thinks they have the authority as an institution or individual to control a person’s reproductive health.”
Halsey’s new single follows the release of her song, The End, in which she detailed her years-long secret battle with health.

Last month, Halsey revealed that she was diagnosed with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and a “rare” T-cell lymphoproliferative disorder in 2022.
“I told myself I’d give myself two more years to be sick,” she said. “At 30, I’m reborn and I’m not going to be sick, I’m going to look super sexy and have a lot of energy and I’ll just be able to redo my 20s when I’m 30.”
The upcoming new album is the follow-up to her fourth studio album, 2021’s ambitious If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power, produced by Trent Reznor and Nine Inch Nails’ Atticus Ross.
In 2022, Halsey shared on Instagram that she had been diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, Sjogre’s syndrome, mast cell activation syndrome, known as MCAS, and postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, known as POTS.
