Fight for the Internet: Gweny vs. Trump! Twitter has a field day as news of Donald Trump’s impeachment and Gwyneth Paltrow’s victory in the figure skating trial reach within hours of each other
News of Donald Trump’s impeachment overshadowed Gwyneth Paltrow’s victory in court Thursday, sending social media into a frenzy as serious legal battles erupted.
The actress won her court case after she was accused of assaulting retired ophthalmologist Terry Sanderson during a ski trip in 2016.
But within the hour, news broke that a New York grand jury had voted to indict the former president, leading some to quip that he should “hire Gwyneth Paltrow’s attorney” for his next legal battle.

News of Donald Trump’s impeachment quickly overshadowed Gwyneth Paltrow’s victory in a figure skating court case on Thursday.

Some of those who cracked jokes about the trial compared it to the infamous 1994 OJ Simpson trial.
The stunningly close announcements between the two legal battles were the focus of many online as pop culture struggled to cope with the giant news day.
During the trial, everything from Paltrow’s fashion choices to the recent testimony of rival Terry Sanderson bore the brunt of the internet’s jokes, some even linking the proceedings to other high-profile legal cases including the infamous OJ Simpson trial in 1994.
The high-profile trial has become an internet sensation in recent weeks after it was broadcast live on eight days of live testimony, with one person describing it as a “walking meme”.
“Winner in Sanderson v. Paltrow to meet Trump in the next round,” another Twitter user taunted with the former president’s indictment announcing.
A third commented: “I wonder if Trump is calling Gwyneth Paltrow for advice right now.”

The stunningly close announcements between the two legal battles have been the focus of many online

After news of the indictment against Donald Trump broke, Twitter had a field day comparing it to Paltrow’s stunning court victory.

The two high-profile legal challenges sparked numerous memes as the stories collided for attention in popular culture

The trial spawned many popular culture memes from years past
Using the imagery of a roller coaster filled with nightmarish skeletons cruising through the grisly revelers’ vans, one of the meme’s creators said the image shows “a convicted Donald Trump walking into a courtroom while Gwyneth Paltrow is not guilty.”
And after the actress’ victory was quickly followed by news of Trump’s impending arrest, another joked, “Donald Trump has a lot to live for if he wants his trial to be as funny as Paltrow’s.”
Gwyneth Paltrow is innocent. Donald Trump is guilty. This is the America we fought for! added another Twitter user.
After several Republicans jumped in support of the embattled ex-president, one Twitter user quipped: “I pretend every vociferous Republican defense of Trump is actually about Gwyneth Paltrow’s ski accident prosecution.”
Paltrow won her case after a jury found that she was not responsible for a horrific skiing accident that injured 76-year-old Terry Sanderson.
But the ruling didn’t stop others from reflecting on her skating skills, with one tweeting: “Instead of jail time, propose to sentence Trump to spend an afternoon skating with Gwyneth Paltrow.”

The Goop Foundation has previously been the focus of ridicule after making a series of ludicrous, indisputable claims over the years, including admitting that it was “derailed” during the pandemic by “eating bread.”
Her legal battle ended Thursday after jurors took two hours and 20 minutes to reach their verdict.
As she left, the actress leaned briefly on Sanderson’s shoulder and whispered something in his ear.
Sanderson’s attorney, Christine Van Orman, said outside the court that she was not surprised by Paltrow and added, “I’ve been an attorney for 30 years and jurors have never surprised me.”
Of Sanderson, she added, “He’s suffering, he’s a very nice guy.”
Sanderson filed for damages in January 2019 – initially seeking $3.1 million. The judge reduced the amount to $300,000 in damages for the injuries he sustained.
But Paltrow then fought back with the fellow skater, filing for a token $1 and covering her legal expenses.
