A body was found inside a Melbourne home after a fire ripped through the building early Sunday morning.

Emergency services were called to the house on Power Street in Saint Albans at 2.40am and arrived to find the single-storey wooden house consumed by fire and a neighboring three-storey apartment building under threat.

Residents of nearby properties were evacuated as 30 firefighters battled for 50 minutes to extinguish the fire.

One person was located dead inside the home, and emergency services have not yet released details about the person.

A crime scene has been established and a fire chemist will attend the scene later today.

The neighboring building was heavily affected by smoke and 3 of the houses suffered minor fire damage. Police are helping to find alternative accommodation for some of the occupants.

“Anyone who witnessed the incident or has information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or,” Senior Constable Jody Clayton said.
