The Storm have secured a nail-biting win over the Auckland Warriors in Melbourne thanks to a last-minute try hailed as one of the best ever.

Melbourne winger Xavier Coates scored the miracle try with 25 seconds left on the clock to deny the Warriors victory in a pulsating Round 2 NRL clash at AAMI Park.

Coates took flight from almost five meters out and somehow managed to plant the ball from his upright position before taking the corner post or making contact.

Fox Sports commentator Mick Ennis called the four-pointer ‘the best try I’ve ever seen’.

‘It’s absolutely ridiculous what he’s just done.’

The try put the Storm back in front with Nick Meaney converting for a final score of 30-26.

Fox commentator and former player Mick Ennis dubbed the try the best he had ever seen

“To be fair, I don’t really know (how I did it),” Coates said after the siren.

‘It was a bit of adrenaline going. I didn’t even know if I got the ball down

‘It came down to the last five minutes. It was collectively a team effort to get ourselves back into the game.’

Melbourne scored twice in the final three minutes of the game – until then the Warriors looked confident of finally taking down their bogey side after dominating the home side in the second half.

The win extends the Storm’s winning streak to 15 over the Warriors, who have not been successful against the men in purple since 2015.

Melbourne led 18-6 at the break, but the visitors scored three tries in the second half to take control of the game.

The Superman effort was highly praised by Cooper Cronk, who said he didn’t ‘get’ how Coates pulled it off

Nothing seemed to go the Storm’s way, with Ryan Papenhuyzen and captain Harry Grant giving away four points with silly penalties in front of the goal posts.

After being pinged for an illegal steal, Papenhuyzen tallied his second try of the night, which came in the 77th minute when Meaney made it a two-point game.

Winger Dallin Watene-Zelezniak scored a try in each half with Warriors halfback Shaun Johnson leading his back line in style.

Roger Tuivasa-Sheck, playing in the centres, was also a constant danger as he continued his transition back to the NRL after two years in rugby.

The first half was all Melbourne with halfback Jahrome Hughes starring with two try-assists, two line-breaks and six tackle-busters.

Meaney’s galloping try came after a Hughes break, but the No.7 was just as important in defence, managing to stop a determined Marcelo Montoya effort with a ball-and-all tackle.
