Specifically, the task of staying on top of your inbox. Gemini is now part of Gmail on the web and mobile, and in addition to using it to find the right words in your emails, you can also have it summarize long emails and threads.

Here I’ll show you how these summary tools work and what else Gemini can do for you, and let you know how reliable it is right now. A word of caution, though: For now, Gemini in Gmail is only available if you or your employer pays for it. Google One AI Premium ($20 per month) or for a Google Workspace account.

Get Gemini summaries in Gmail

There are a few ways to get Gemini digests in Gmail, if the feature is enabled for your account. Most of them can be accessed through the Gemini logo, which is a distinctive black star shape. on the webClick the Gemini button in the top right corner of Gmail to open the side panel. There, you can see summaries of your entire inbox or the particular thread you have open.

In Gmail for Android and iOSThe Gemini button appears in the top right corner if you’re viewing a list of emails, or in the center at the top if you’re viewing a particular thread. On mobile, there is also a specific Summarize this email Button that appears when you are viewing a single email or email thread.

That Summarize this email The button is the easiest way to get started, but you can also tell Gemini to “summarize today’s emails,” “summarize this week’s emails,” “summarize my unread emails,” or “summarize emails that I received last month”, anything related to those guidelines. After Gemini spends a few moments thinking, you’ll receive a response on the screen, along with follow-up questions you might want to ask. (You can request a longer summary, for example.)

The results will be presented as a series of vignettes, with Sources Below: Click or tap these sources to view the individual emails from which the information was extracted. By using the icons next to responses, you can also copy the text elsewhere, give your thumbs up or thumbs up to Gemini’s response, or clear your AI chat history.

Here I’m primarily focusing on Gemini’s summary capabilities in Gmail, but there are many other commands you can explore. In fact, you can ask Gemini almost any question you want about what’s in your inbox, and it will at least try to provide an answer, sifting through the gigabytes of data in your emails for answers.
