Those who were hoping for a new day in New York City for the Giants as they transition from Daniel Jones to Tommy DeVito as the starting quarterback have been sorely disappointed by the team’s performance against Tampa Bay.
The Giants have been shut out by the Buccaneers so far in Sunday’s game, with the score standing at 23-0 at halftime between the teams.
DeVito’s performance and the overall state of play for the Giants can best be described by two plays in the first half.
On a third down play, New York’s offensive line crumbled, leaving DeVito exposed to a huge sack from Tampa Bay’s Calijah Kancey.
In the second quarter, opposing quarterback Baker Mayfield ran for a touchdown, mocking Tommy DeVito with a celebration.
Mayfield raised his arms in the air, similar to how Italian Americans sometimes generalize to talk.
Tommy DeVito has had a terrible performance in his first game as the Giants’ quarterback
The Buccaneers dominated the Giants in every aspect on Sunday at MetLife Stadium
‘Tommy Cutlets’ is beloved for his Italian-American heritage, hence his nickname.
To start the second half, DeVito actually led a promising drive, but it stalled only within five yards of the end zone thanks to a Tyrone Tracy fumble.
DeVito will start his first game of the season after Jones was benched earlier this week and subsequently released by the Giants.
DeVito was picked to start this week despite being the third-string quarterback all season.
Drew Lock, who backed up Jones every week and served as a backup to DeVito starting against the Buccaneers, signed a one-year, $5 million contract this offseason.
All that money is guaranteed for the former Missouri quarterback, which only compounds the problems for the Giants.
The Giants ultimately lost the game 30-7, with DeVito going 21-for-31 for 189 yards and no touchdowns.
