Generation Z has declared the eighties as the decade they would most like to live in

Maybe it was a simpler time, without the Internet, smartphones, or progressive consciousness.

That might explain why Generation Z has declared the 1980s as the decade they would most like to have lived in.

A survey revealed that VHS tapes, Woolies pick ‘n’ mix sweets, leg warmers and David Bowie are some of the most popular things of the era.

Sixty percent of Generation Z (broadly considered to be those born between 1997 and 2010) chose the 1980s.

And nine in ten of them said they believe the decade’s fads have returned, while retro games have also become popular again.

While you can be forgiven for viewing that decade with a rosy view, it is also a favorite among those who actually lived through it.

Seven out of ten of them consider that it was the best time to be a teenager, although almost half also admit that looking at photos of themselves gives them the creeps.

Most said they feel sad because younger Britons will never understand what it’s like to have only four TV channels, and half desperate because today’s young people will never go to a video store to rent a movie.

PacMan, Nintendo, The A-Team and MTV also make the list of the best things about the era. The research was commissioned to mark the release of the new film Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F on Netflix.

The first film in the comedy franchise, starring Eddie Murphy, was a huge hit in 1984.

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer said: ‘For me, the ’80s have always been in style, but it’s nice to see others now catching up.

‘As a decade, it was known for being truly innovative, so much so that the influence of that period can still be seen today in style, films and music.’

According to a survey of 2,000 Britons, the best things from the 1980s included Woolworths Pick n Mix, David Bowie, George Michael, VHS tapes, Sony Walkman cassette players, Rubik’s Cubes, The A-Team, Blockbuster video stores, leg warmers, and recording mixtapes.
