Gareth Bale has admitted he thought UK prime minister Boris Johnson was still the Mayor of London and claims he doesn’t know ’99 per cent of Brexit’.

The UK’s withdrawal from the European Union has dominated the news since a referendum was held in 2016 and Johnson has been the leader of the country since July.

However, Real Madrid star Bale appears to be completely cut off from current affairs in his homeland and focuses more of his time keeping track of golf results.

In an interview with The Telegraph, Bale was asked about his view on Brexit but had to admit he has very little knowledge of the subject.

He said: ‘I look in terms of stuff financially, because [Brexit] affects me in a certain way for investments or money, because things change, but I don’t read most of the nonsense. I genuinely don’t know 99 per cent of Brexit. I don’t even know who the prime minister is anymore. I haven’t got a clue.’

After being told it is Johnson, Bale replied: ‘Well, there we go. I didn’t know that. I thought he was the mayor?

‘I can’t have a say in it so I’m not interested. I follow the golf, that’s about it. I can tell you who’s number one in the world?’.

Sportsmail understands the meeting was routine between the player and his long-term representative, Jonathan Barnett.

Real Madrid have said Bale had permission to make the trip and did train in the confines of the Valdebebas training ground on Monday morning before going to London.

The winger has been linked with an exit from the Bernabeu throughout 2019 and was close to a move to China in the summer before Real called the deal off due to financial concerns.
