A former University of Florida football player is behind bars after he was arrested for the murder of his wife in 2016.

Earl & # 39; Tony & # 39; Joiner, 33, has been accused of second-degree murder in the falling death of Heyzel Obando.

Obando, 26, was found dead in her apartment on Valentine's Day in 2016. The couple had two daughters together who are now three and six years old.

Fort Myers Police did not release any other details in the three-year-old murder case and merely claimed that they worked closely with the Oxygen television series Cold Justice and the Office of the State Attorney.

Joiner was arrested Saturday around 10.30 am in Lakes Wales, Florida. He is being held without a tape.

Two months after Obando's body was found, Fort Meyers police found her death a murder.

A month after Obando was killed, Joiner was detained in Lee County jail for breaking a probationary period. He was released in May 2016.

Isabel Martinez, the mother of Obando, said she hopes that Joiner now feels & # 39; the weight of the law & # 39 ;.

& # 39; As a mother, I understand the pain that his mother is going through. But as a mother, no one will take my pain away, & she added.

Martinez, who moved to Miami from Key West shortly after her daughter's murder, was given permanent custody of the couple's daughters in 2017.

& # 39; I'm feeling stuck & # 39 ;, she said. & # 39; This process was not easy. Maybe I can continue with this news now. & # 39;

Joiner was a star safety for the Florida Gators from 2004 to 2007. He served as a team captain in his senior season.

As a junior at the university, Joiner led all UF defensive backs with 59 tackles. Florida continued to beat Ohio State for the BCS national championship to end that season.

During his senior year, Joiner had 64 outfits and two interceptions, but encountered legal problems after he was arrested for having burgled a seizure to remove his girlfriend's car.

Joiner is the second player of the 2006 national championship team to be arrested for murder.

His teammate Aaron Hernandez played for the New England Patriots before he was convicted for the murder of Odin Lloyd in June 2013.

The following year, Hernandez was charged with a double homicide, but was acquitted in April 2017. Days later he hung himself in his cell.
