Midfielder Joe Ledley from Wales has joined the Australian A-League side Newcastle Jets for a short-term deal.

Ledley joins former international colleague Carl Robinson, who was appointed head coach of Jets earlier this month until the end of the season.

“I came here to play, and I know I have to be at my best to earn a place in the starting XI here in Newcastle,” Ledley told the official Jets website.

“I’ve only been to Australia once before for a pre-season tour with Celtic in 2011, and I’m really looking forward to the Hyundai A-League challenge.

“The opportunity to work under Carl is also one I’m looking forward to, we met in a few camps in Wales when I was young and having the chance to get in touch with him again is exciting.”

Ledley, 33, began his career with club town Cardiff before joining Celtic, where he made more than 150 appearances and won three Scottish Premiership titles.

He then played for Crystal Palace, Derby and Charlton and won 77 caps for Wales, making his country reach the semi-final of Euro 2016 in France.

Robinson said: ‘Joe’s record at club and international level speaks for itself, he’s a class player and it’s great to have him here with the Jets for the rest of the season.

“He is the type of player who will really help our younger boys, plus he will add another dimension to our game and I think he will have a good impact.”
