The BBC and ITV are battling to add number one target Jurgen Klopp to their European Championship pundit teams.

However, sport mail understands that both will be disappointed as the outgoing Liverpool manager is expected to reject the offers and instead head to the tournament in his native Germany as a fan.

The UK’s two main broadcasters are understood to be desperate to add Klopp to their line-ups for the summer showdown. They believe the charismatic Anfield boss would be a must-see signing and would give their cover the edge in the traditional battle for spectators.

Klopp will leave Liverpool at the end of the season and both have significantly stepped up their attempts to bring him into their teams. Insiders have revealed that the BBC has been the more aggressive of the two.

But it is very likely that both of them will fail in their mission, which may well leave viewers disappointed.

He is understood to be willing to pull the plug after what will no doubt be an emotional departure from Liverpool after almost nine years in charge.

The run-up to his final campaign is likely to be intense, with his team, who have already lifted the Carabao Cup, also seeking Premier League, FA Cup and Europa League glory.

Klopp, who led Liverpool to their first top-flight title in 30 years and lifted the Champions League in 2019, declined to take part after hearing of the interest and is said to have no desire to enter the studio.

Instead, the 56-year-old Stuttgart-born coach, who had previously been linked with the national team job, will take part in the action from the stands and will probably also take a much-needed vacation.

Klopp announced his departure from Liverpool with a lengthy statement in January in which he said he was “running out of energy.” And he added: ‘I’m absolutely fine now. I know I can’t do the job again and again and again and again.’
