Fernandinho has confirmed that Manchester City had a “significant chance” of signing Cristiano Ronaldo for United during the summer transfer window.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner made a sensational return to United after signing from Juventus on the deadline for a deal worth £19.8 million.
However, Fernandinho has revealed how Ronaldo’s agent Jorge Mendes had visited Manchester City to discuss a potential deal with the Premier League champions.

Manchester City would be on pole position this summer to give Ronaldo a two-year contract.
However, it is believed the deal failed as the club was unwilling to pay Juventus’ proposed fee.
In addition, the Premier League giants are said to have required Ronaldo to undergo a significant cut in his wages of £500,000 a week.
That is why Manchester United dived in and signed the two-year contract with an option for another year. The deal cost the Red Devils £12.9million with £6.9million to follow in add-ons.
After the transfer debacle, Fernandinho has outlined exactly how close City came to signing the superstar. When he spoke to ESPN, he said: ‘I think there was a good, significant opportunity.

“I think his agent was here at the club to extend Ederson’s contracts, Ruben Dias, given the situation of Bernardo Silva, Joao Cancelo.
“When you sit there at the table, you can of course talk about everything and about every possible player.”
Fernandinho also said he thought the pressure to sign the attacker and the expectations placed on the club were what caused the deal to collapse.
He said: ‘I think there were also a lot of expectations raised with the possibility of him coming here.
“This undoubtedly affects not only the fans, but also the people within the club.

However, Manchester United lost their opening game in the Champions League on Tuesday
“But in the end it didn’t work out, he didn’t close the deal and ended up going to the red side of town. Life goes on.’
Manchester United are in the running for a major trophy this season after bolstering their roster with players like Ronaldo. Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane.
Ronaldo has already impressed the squad – scoring three goals in two games for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.
As a result, many have touted them for winning their Champions League years, despite their failure in the Europa League final in Gdansk last season.
However, Fernandinho still believes that Manchester City has what it takes to dominate Europe.
He said, ‘If you’re going to compare name by name, I think it’s very level. Both teams have a very good selection. Perhaps one or the other will wash away a very small benefit.
“But I think, because of the level of play, the way we spent five or six years with Pep. have played [Guardiola], we have a defined game standard, we know exactly how each player behaves or should behave on the pitch.

“We know the quality of each player and how he can play the best part in the games. No doubt we have a little more advantage in this matter.
“With practically the same players since 2017, it’s no wonder the club have won three titles in the last five.
“But without a doubt, because of the history, the weight of the shirt, the quality of the players, United can quickly reach the level where we are now.”
