The FDA has issued a recall of a prepackaged seafood salad in five northeastern states over concerns it contains a potential allergen.
There were 1,668 units of the product, Hannaford Grocer’s 12 oz Hannaford Seafood Salad, distributed to grocery stores between October 25 and 29 with the incorrect label.
The seafood salad contains soy, which can be a dangerous allergen for some people, but the packaging did not include that detail.
The product is manufactured by a company called Elevation Foods and has been recalled from Hannaford grocery stores in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts and New York.
No one has gotten sick from the mistake. Instead, authorities were alerted to the problem when the company discovered that its printer had issued labels that incorrectly indicated the ingredients in the mixture.
Soy allergies range from mild (causing itching and coughing) to severe (causing anaphylaxis and vomiting). During anaphylaxis, the tongue, throat or airways become inflamed, cutting off the supply of oxygen, which can cause damage to vital organs and death.
Taking these risks into account, the FDA said, “Consumers with a severe allergy or sensitivity to soy are at risk of a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products.”
Hannaford’s is a northeastern supermarket chain that sells its own brand of pre-packaged deli products in store. supposedly they have removed the product from store shelves.
Still, authorities warn that if you purchased this product in one of the five states mentioned last week, you should not consume it.
You can return them to Hannaford stores for a full refund, according to the FDA.
If you experience anaphylaxis in response to a food allergy, you can treat it with an epinephrine autoinjector, also known as an EpiPen, and head to the hospital.
