Captain Manuel Neuer will probably remain Bayern Munich’s number one if he fully recovers from a fractured lower leg.
According to “Bild” there are internal voices that see the 37-year-old world champion from 2014 in good condition “a class” above his current substitute and possible challenger Yann Sommer.
If Neuer manages to be at 100 percent again in the summer, as planned, it is very likely that he will be back in goal for the German record champions in the coming season, they say. According to the report, Sommer’s not always convincing performances in recent weeks have contributed to this.
FC Bayern had iced the 34-year-old Swiss away from Borussia Mönchengladbach in response to Neuer’s serious injury in the winter. The Munich team transferred eight million euros to the Lower Rhine, and Sommer signed until 2025 on Säbener Straße.
FC Bayern: criticism of Yann Sommer is growing
Most recently, the goalkeeper, who is only 1.83 meters tall, came under criticism – “rightly so”, as goalkeeper legend Jean-Marie Pfaff judged on “TZ” and “Münchner Merkur”. “I didn’t recognize him against Manchester City. He played bad passes, always to the side instead of forward. I don’t understand why he tried to build the game, it was too risky.”
In this context, Pfaff complained about Sommer’s lack of communication with the people in front. “They have to know where to stand. Sommer didn’t do that. He just stood still and waited. I don’t know, did he take sleeping pills?” said the Belgian.
The former Bundesliga professional and today’s “Sky” expert Dietmar Hamann said that Sommer was “hopelessly overwhelmed” in the premier class cracker against ManCity (0: 3).
After Sommer started his engagement at FC Bayern with good performances, voices were raised that thought a changing of the guard between the posts was possible. In the meantime, however, Neuer seems to have the better cards again.
It remains unclear how Alexander Nübel will continue in Munich. The former S04 keeper returns to AS Monaco in the summer after a loan spell.
