Tottenham defender Micky van de Ven has recorded the fastest pace in the Premier League this season, but new data has thrown up some surprises in the early part of the campaign.
Van de Ven has earned a reputation as one of the Premier League’s fastest stars since joining Tottenham from Wolfsburg at the start of last season.
After topping the fastest speed rankings in the 2023-24 campaign, the Dutch defender is back at the top of the rankings seven games into the new season.
Van de Ven has already shown his pace by setting counter-attacking goals with solo runs against Everton and Man United.
In new data published by the bbc and Opta, the 23-year-old player has become the fastest player in the top category by reaching a maximum speed of 37.1 km/h.

Kyle Walker surprisingly ranks 80th fastest pace in the Premier League this season
The Tottenham star is closely followed by Wolves winger Carlos Forbs and Nottingham Forest player Anthony Elanga, who have reached 36.6 and 35.9 km/h respectively.
Manchester City’s goal machine, Erling Haaland, is in fourth place with 35.7 km/h, registering the same speed as another Tottenham player, Timo Werner.
Haaland, who has scored 10 goals in seven games this season, was also the one who walked the most in the top flight, with 28.2 km covered.
His teammate Kyle Walker has regularly been at the top of the Premier League’s fastest player rankings throughout his career.
The Manchester City captain has recorded the second fastest speed in the competition with 37.31 km/h, only surpassed by Van de Ven with 37.38 km/h last season.
However, the 34-year-old is only 80th in the top flight after seven games into the new season.
Gabriel Martinelli and Alejandro Garnacho lead the way for Arsenal and Man United respectively, with 35.6 and 35.5 km/h respectively.
Mohamed Salah has been surpassed by Trent Alexander-Arnold and becomes Liverpool’s fastest player
Chelsea’s new signing Pedro Neto leads the Blues and the winger has reached a top speed of 35.4 km/h.
In another surprising result, Mohamed Salah is no longer Liverpool’s fastest player, with Trent Alexander-Arnold leading the way instead.
Alexander-Arnold has reached a maximum speed of 34.7 km/h.
