Family of Deundrea Holloway say he’s ‘not a monster’ despite decapitating his pregnant ex

The family of a mentally ill Illinois man who beheaded his pregnant ex-girlfriend says he’s not a monster and was driven to murder by “extreme paranoia.”

Deundrea Holloway, 22, last week murdered Liese Dodd, who was eight months pregnant with her first child.

Her severed head was found in a dumpster outside her Illinois apartment building.

It’s unclear when the couple broke up – Deundrea’s family doesn’t believe he was the father of the unborn baby Liese was carrying.

He is now behind bars on charges of murder.

In a YouTube video posted last week, his stepfather Chris Hawk said the family was “ashamed” of what he had done but insisted he was not a “monster.”

He said they had been trying to give him mental health care for three years, but nothing was done because he had committed no crime.

“I’m not going to deny that what happened was an extreme act of evil… We are ashamed. His mother, his sister. We are all shocked.

“We knew he was capable of violence, but we never saw this. We’ve been trying to get help for him for at least three years. As for long-term mental health care, we were always told they can’t hold him unless he’s done something.

“Now he’s being held for doing something.”

Liese Dodd, 22, was murdered last week in Alton, Illinois

The murdered woman's ex Deundrea Holloway, 22, has been charged with two counts of first degree murder, two counts of willful manslaughter of an unborn child, mutilation of a human body, motor vehicle offenses and concealment of a death by manslaughter

Hawk continues: ‘Our system is failing people with mental health problems. People are on their own. It’s a tragic situation.’

He then turned his camera to pictures of Deundrea as a high school soccer player, looking happy.

“This is the Dee we knew. There’s a human there. He’s not a monster – what he did was savage. What he did was monstrous, but he is not a monster.

“It was in his head that everyone was out to get him. Even his own family,” he said.

He previously said: The sun that his mother, Carla, had begged him to break up with Liese.

“Carla actually said, ‘You guys need to break up’. It was a very poisonous thing,’ he said.

Her decapitated head was found in a dumpster outside the building in a murder case that police have described as ‘horrific’.

Dodd, who affectionately referred to her unborn child as “my little bean,” is described by her family as “a bright light that cared for everyone.”

Liese Dodd

Liese Dodd, who was eight months pregnant with her first child, was discovered Thursday by her mother in her apartment in Alton, Illinois.

Her mother, Heidi Noel, said the family was planning a baby shower for Dodd at the end of this month — and were collecting presents for the birth in late July.

Noel, who is now planning a funeral for her daughter and granddaughter, said she had sent out the invitations and the family was collecting gifts together.

She said Holloway was not the baby’s father, but the couple had been in an on-again, off-again relationship for two years.

“We were planning her baby shower for the end of this month,” Noel said KMOV† ‘I had sent out the invitations to the baby shower the previous Saturday. We were just excited and gathered the items you need to have a baby.

“She wasn’t on a name yet. [She] said “my little bean”. So we actually called the baby ‘baby bean.’

Noel now plans to hold a “lifetime celebration” for her daughter and grandchild after finding Dodd’s headless body.

“It’s not something I wish on anyone. So yeah, I’d rather not talk about that,” she said.

The suspect has been charged with two counts of first degree murder, two counts of willful manslaughter of an unborn child, mutilation of a human body, motor vehicle offenses and concealment of a murder by murder.

Holloway is being held on $2,000,000 bail.

Dodd grew up and went to school in Jerseyville, Illinois, and had recently moved into a house in Alton.

Noel said that because of the “nature” of Dodd’s relationship with Holloway, she would contact her daughter every day to check in. But after she hadn’t responded for a while, she decided to check on her.

A neighbor told local news channel 5 On Your Side that Noel looked “so devastated” after discovering her daughter’s body.

“She turned around, she looked at us, me and my friend were standing in the doorway and she said, ‘He… [expletive] killed her,” said the neighbor.

April Wooten, Dodd’s neighbor, said: ‘I have a 3-year-old daughter and I can’t imagine anyone getting their hands on her in any way or having to find my daughter that way.

“I also pray for her mother and her family, in the hope that one day they will find some kind of peace.”

noel said: that knowing Holloway had been charged had given her some relief.

“I’m glad he’s off the street, and that’s my great hope he can’t do this to anyone else,” she said.

Paying tribute to her daughter, Noel said she had a “beautiful smile.”

“She was just a bright light who cared about everyone,” Noel continued. “She had a big heart. She would do anything for anyone. She would do her best to help people.’

Alton Police Chief Marcos Pulido said in an emotional video that Dodd’s murder is “horrific,” adding that she was “beheaded by a freaking barbarian monster.”

He added: “This daughter, this mother-to-be, and her family, were in the planning stages of a baby shower to take place at the end of June.

“Instead, the family is now planning a funeral because of what a monster did. incomprehensible. What a wild monster did to her.

“Her mother went through something that no one should ever experience. First of all, no parent should ever have to bury their child.

“But her mother hadn’t heard from her in a while and wanted to see her to see if she was okay and found her in a way you can’t imagine.”

The suspect was taken to the Macoupin County Jail, where he was later identified as wanted for questioning by the Alton Police Department.

Madison County District Attorney Thomas Haine said: “We believe the evidence will show that the defendant’s horrific actions here killed both a young woman and the child she was carrying in her womb.

“In the eyes of the law, both murders are equal and he will now face both charges.”

Neighbors told KMOV they are praying for Dodd’s family.

Some of Noel’s classmates are planning an exhibition to commemorate her daughter.

“I really appreciate the support and wish she’d known how loved she was,” said Noel. ‘That she would never have been alone, [and] that she could have gotten out of this relationship and have a full life.”

Police chief describes murder as ‘horrific’

Alton Police Chief Marcos Pulido said in an emotional video that the murder of Liese Dodd is “horrific,” adding that she was “beheaded by a freaking barbarian monster.”

Pulido said: ‘What was learned, what was found, was absolutely terrible.

“What happened to 22-year-old Lisa Dodd is beyond incomprehensible. It’s horrible. It’s totally awful.

“Which Deundrea Holloway, who that monster was accused of today, might silence some people.

“She was brutally murdered. She was beheaded by a goddamn ferocious monster.

Her unborn child also died as a result. So she was brutally murdered, as was her unborn child.’

Pulido added: “This daughter, this mother-to-be, and her family, were in the planning stages of a baby shower to take place at the end of June.

“Instead, the family is now planning a funeral because of what a monster did. incomprehensible. What a wild monster did to her.

“Her mother went through something that no one should ever experience. First of all, no parent should ever have to bury their child.

“But her mother hadn’t heard from her in a while and wanted to see her to see if she was okay and found her in a way you can’t imagine.

He added: “These are details I wish I never had to share. These are public because of the formal charges that have been issued.

“It is absolutely terrible what that monster did to her and her unborn child.”
