The hosts thought they had taken the lead when Abdoulaye Doucoure rose to beat Nick Pope, but a subsequent VAR review ruled out the possible opening goal.

EVERTON
Jordan Pickford 8
Read Gordon’s intention to save the penalty that ultimately gave his team a point. He was also skilled with his feet to clean up behind the defense. MOTHER.
James Garner 7
I would never have known I was out of position at right back. I tried bravely with Barnes and later with Joelinton.
James Tarkowski 4.5
Ridiculous foul on Tonali for a penalty, but he redeemed himself with a great block from the same player at the beginning of the second half. However, there are other sloppy moments.
Michael Keane 6
While Tarkowski struggled, he was much more solid. Read play with a couple of key interceptions.
Ashley young 5.5
This time he worked well defensively, especially against speed merchant Murphy, but offered little to go in any other direction.
Pickford was rock solid for the Toffees and cleaned up behind the defense when needed.
Club captain James Tarkowski was rightly punished for a ridiculous foul that led to the penalty.
Abdoulaye Doucoure 6
He was the best in the local midfield and tried to get the ball and make things happen, but quality was lacking at the crucial moment. Good goal line block by Tonali.
Orel Mangala 4.5
Little influence on the game and didn’t seem to get up to speed when Joelinton overtook him early in the second half. He was soon replaced. Poor.
jack harrison 6
He worked hard to help Garner and had a couple of good touches, but he didn’t provide the threat his team needed.
Dwight McNeil 5.5
Not last week’s impact at No. 10. He rarely saw the ball and a deflected shot in the second half summed up his evening.
Iliman Ndiaye 6.5
He deservedly won the applause of the local public after an entrepreneurial skill. He showed a lot of promise, even if the last ball was missing.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin 6
It was difficult and he did it well as the service he received was not excellent. He didn’t take advantage of most of the opportunities he had.

Dwight McNeil struggled to impact the game like he did at number 10 last week.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin was hardworking but struggled to take advantage of the opportunities he got
Iliman Ndiaye demonstrated considerable potential but his final product left much to be desired.
NEWCASTLE
Nick Papa 7
He had to make a big save in the second half from Calvert-Lewin and he did.
Kieran Trippier 6
He was not yet at his best in attack, but he did well in defense before an injury forced him to retire.
Fabian Schar 6
Calvert-Lewin manhandled him at times and it wasn’t the easiest night in that regard. The forward passes were good at times.
They burn 6.5
He was good aerially and had a couple of big recovery challenges.
Lewis Room 6
Two sloppy passes early on and that continued, including a slow ball during a promising break.
Kieran Trippier put in a solid defensive performance before being forced to retire injured.
Despite missing his penalty, Gordon proved to be a constant threat to the visitors throughout.
Many of Newcastle’s best chances came from Bruno Guimaraes pulling the strings in midfield.
Sandro Tonali wasted possession before being substituted in the second half
Sandro Tonali 5
He lost the ball too often for such a technical player. He still needs to be convinced of his effectiveness away from home.
Bruno Guimaraes 7.5
The best player on his team and he saw a lot of the ball. He was always looking to make things happen and, unlike others, he didn’t waste as much on it.
Joelinton 7
A much better performance in terms of aggression and fitness and taking on Everton. Still, better quality is needed on the ball.
Jacob Murphy 5
He faced the veteran Young at left back, but did not take advantage of his pace to capitalize. There was also poor execution on a couple of decent opportunities.
Antonio Gordon 6.5
The penalty was surprising (it was a poor execution by his standards), but he never hid and was a threat throughout. However, he should have scored when he cleared late.
Harvey Barnes 5.5
He was unable to overcome makeshift right-back Garner and was moved to centre-forward in the second half, but was withdrawn after a quiet hour.
