Erling Haaland closed the gap on Mohamed Salah for the highest goal contribution in the Premier League this season after his late goal in the Manchester derby, but is still three off the league’s best.

The Norwegian saved some blushes with the goal after inexplicably failing at close range at the end of the first half against Manchester United.

Haaland took his combined league tally to 23, one behind Salah, who was forced to miss Liverpool’s 1-0 win over Nottingham Forest through injury. The Egyptian has a record of 15 goals and nine assists in his 21 league games this season.

However, their impressive feat improved this weekend when an English striker rose to the top of the rankings as one of six Three Lions stars represented on the list.

Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins scored a brace in the 3-2 win over Luton, moving him two points clear of Salah on the combined list, while also propelling him ahead of the Egyptian in the table of scorers.

Erling Haaland avoided some of his blushes with a late goal in Man City’s victory over Man United.

Watkins is enjoying by far his most productive campaign in the top flight, having already surpassed his record seasons for goals and assists, even with 11 games left to play. He is currently just shy of averaging a goal contribution in each game.

Equally impressive is the form shown by Bukayo Saka after the winter break. The 22-year-old has seven goals in his last five league games and is fourth on the goal contribution list with 20.

The top five is completed by Tottenham captain Son Heung-Min on 19, after scoring in the weekend’s 3-1 win over Crystal Palace, his first since returning from the Asian Cup last month.

Four players are tied for tenth place this season, with three of them making a strong case to be included in Gareth Southgate’s squad for this summer’s European Championships.

Cole Palmer has been a rare bright spark in Chelsea’s miserable season and has 17 goals and assists to his name. As did West Ham star Jarrod Bowen, Bournemouth’s Dominic Solanke and Liverpool’s irrepressible Darwin Nunez.

Gareth Southgate will be delighted to see six England forwards in the top 10 ahead of the summer Euros.

Phil Foden took his scoring tally to 18 in the entire competition with an impressive brace against the Red Devils at the Etihad.

The Uruguayan came off the bench to score the winning goal in the 99th minute for Jurgen Klopp’s team that raised his goal tally to 10, one better than he achieved in his entire first campaign.

One of them ahead of that quartet is Phil Foden, who produced another stunning performance in City’s dominant derby against Erik ten Hag’s side. The 23-year-old’s brace brings his total to 18 goals in all competitions this season.
