Elton John has postponed his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour in Europe and the UK to 2023 as he awaits surgery after ‘an uneasy fall’.

The hitmaker, 74, took to Instagram on Thursday to announce the news to fans, describing his “great sadness” before explaining: “I fell awkwardly on a hard surface and have had a lot of pain and discomfort in my hip ever since. ‘

The star has spent the summer with husband David Furnish, 58, and their two sons, in various European hot spots, where he has now revealed he suffered the fall.

In the full statement, Elton describes: “It is with great sadness and heavy heart that I have been forced to move the 2021 dates of my Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour in Europe and the UK to 2023.

“At the end of my summer vacation I fell awkwardly on a hard surface and have had a lot of pain and discomfort in my hip ever since…

‘Despite intensive physio and specialist treatment, the pain has become progressively worse and makes it increasingly difficult to move…

“I’ve been advised to have surgery as soon as possible to get me back to full fitness and make sure there are no long-term complications…

“I will be following an intensive physical therapy program that will ensure a full recovery and return to full mobility without pain.

“I’m going to complete the Global Citizen charity event on September 25, because I don’t want to abandon a good cause…

“Because it’s only five songs, it’s a very different physical endeavor from the demands of playing nearly three hours a night on tour and traveling overnight between countries…

“After this, I will undergo surgery to get the tour back on the road in January 2022 in New Orleans.

“I know how patient my incredible fans have been since Covid stopped touring last year, and it breaks my heart to keep you waiting any longer…
