Is there a tech billionaire you hear more about than Elon Musk? The founder of Tesla and SpaceX looks for a new field every few weeks in which he causes a stir.
Now he has revealed on the American broadcaster Fox that he is said to be working on “TruthGPT” (via TheVerge.com).
The reason is not just progress or money – at least if you want to believe it. He is allegedly concerned with creating a “maximum truth-seeking AI” in order to “avoid the destruction of mankind”.
“I’m going to start something I call TruthGPT, or a maximal truth-seeking AI that’s trying to understand the nature of the universe. (…) I think this might be the best route to safety since an AI that cares about understanding the universe is unlikely to wipe out humans because we are an interesting part of the universe.«

Musk shared that he intended “TruthGPT” to be understood as a course correction from OpenAI, the developers of ChatGPT. He co-founded OpenAI as a non-profit organization at the time. In the meantime, however, the company has founded a subsidiary that is supposed to bring profit.
According to Musk, the profit incentives could ensure that the ethics of the AI models could be so compromised. “TruthGPT” is intended to be a transparent alternative.
However, the idea of truth-seeking AI is not new. Back in February he tweeted »What we need is TruthGPT«.

More recently, Elon Musk and other big names in tech, such as Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, had one Development phase required for Large Language Models (like ChatGPT)..
How far the work on “TruthGPT” has progressed – if it has even started – is not known. Musk almost secretly has a new one in March Founded AI company called X.AI. It is quite possible that this company is or will be responsible for the development.
